During the final days of World War II, Father Lankester Merrin was forced to personally select men from his Dutch village for Nazi soldiers to execute after a German soldier was killed, which caused him a trauma that destroyed his faith and led him to leave the priesthood years later. In 1947, while working with an excavation expedition in Kenya, he discovers an ancient church buried above a mysterious demonic temple, and as the place is opened, terrifying events begin to spread among the soldiers and locals, including murders, hallucinations, and strange violence, until it becomes clear that an evil spirit has taken control of a child named Cheche. As chaos escalates and several people die, Merrin is forced to confront his past and his fears once again and perform an exorcism ritual inside the temple. In a harsh confrontation with the devil and his painful memories, he finally succeeds in saving the boy and regaining part of his faith, but he realizes in the end that the evil he faced has not completely disappeared.
